US presidential election panel debate with Tom Switzer and Professor L. Gordon Flake

As the November US Presidential election approaches, AIIA WA invites our members and guests to join us for a panel discussion with Mr Tom Switzer and Professor L. Gordon Flake, who will offer their invaluable insights into the controversial and unprecedented presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. US elections are always closely observed around the world, but this election occurs at a time of great uncertainty and its implications will be far reaching.  Australia and many other countries will be apprehensively anticipating the result. So join us for this timely discussion as our guest speakers share their thoughts.

Time: 6pm for a 6:30pm start

Venue: St Catherines College, 2 Park Road, Crawley (opposite UWA)

Parking on College grounds is limited to those with parking permits. Free parking is available opposite at UWA’s Recreation Centre & Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. Street parking is also available at the rear of the College on Park Road and surrounding streets.

Cost: $5 for members & $15 for non members. Pay at the door on the night, or register and pay online.

Members and guests are invited to join the speaker for dinner afterwards at the Chinese Village Restaurant on Broadway. $25pp including beverages. RSVPs taken on the night.


About the Speakers:

Tom Switzer

Tom Switzer is a senior fellow at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney where he teaches undergraduate courses in US politics, US foreign policy, US – Australia relations and Australian diplomatic history. He is also host of Between the Lines on the ABC’s Radio National. In 2009 he was a candidate in the Liberal party primary for the federal seat of Bradfield in northern Sydney. He was also editor of Spectator Australia (2009-14), opinion page editor for The Australian (2001-08), an editorial writer at The Australian Financial Review (1998-2001) and an assistant editor at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC (1995-98). He has a Masters in International Relations and a Bachelor of Arts in History (First Class Honours) both from the University of



Gordon Flake

Professor L. Gordon Flake is the founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, a position he assumed in January of 2014. He was previously Executive Director of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, a Senior Fellow and Associate Director of the Program on Conflict Resolution at The Atlantic Council of the United States and prior to that Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America.

He has authored numerous publications on policy issues in Asia an  d is a regular contributor to the press on Asia issues. He serves on the Board of the United States Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (USCSCAP) as co-Vice Chair of the Board of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea on the Advisory Council of the Korea Economic Institute of America, and on the International Advisory Board of the David M. Kennedy Center at Brigham Young University.

Mr. Flake was born in Rehoboth, New Mexico. He received his BA degree in Korean with a minor in international relations from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He completed his MA at the David M. Kennedy Center for International and Area Studies, also at B.Y.U. He speaks both fluent Korean and Laotian.
