Iran: A State in Transition

Thursday 16th February 2017 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Mr Ian Dudgeon, AIIA Presidential Associate.

First in a series of two on Iran.

Ahead of the Study Tour to Iran in April, AIIA Victoria is delighted to welcome Mr Ian Dudgeon to share his insights on the country.  He will look briefly at the history of Persia/Iran, events leading up to the 1979 revolution, and political developments since, including the significance of the 2015 nuclear agreement, and the current tensions between Iran and the US since the election of President Trump.

Ian visited Iran in late 2015, where he had week-long meetings in Tehran with officials of the Iranian government, think tanks and academics.  He subsequently spent two weeks touring the country, including visits to Kerman, Shiraz, Persepolis, Yazd, Esfahan, Kashan and Qom.  In 2016, Ian co-hosted a presentation by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at AIIA NSW.

Ian Dudgeon is a Presidential Associate of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA), and was President of AIIA’s ACT branch during 2008 – 2012.  Prior to 1997, Ian served for some 30 years in the Foreign Affairs and Trade and Defence portfolios, and was posted to Australian diplomatic missions in Chile, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan.  Since 1997 he has run his own Canberra-based consultancy, providing policy research, training and other services to government and the private sector, in Australia and overseas.  Over the past 6 years Ian has focused on visiting, researching and reporting publicly through the AIIA and other think tanks on South and Central Asia, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.  Much of his past reporting on Iran is available through Australian Outlook on the AIIA national website.  Ian has a Bachelor of Economics degree from Monash University, a graduate diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and attended a residential Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
