Brexit in a New World?

Thursday 9th February 2017 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Sir Nigel Broomfield KCMG.

The British Brexit vote in June 2016 to leave the European Union sent reverberations across the globe, and its broader results are yet to be fully determined.

Importantly though, it has marked a renewed rise of populism in a political landscape facing widespread uncertainty.

The world is watching closely as US President-elect Donald Trump begins his first year in office, at the helm of a seemingly divided nation.  And a similar sentiment has been growing in other countries such as France and Germany, both of whom hold their own elections this year.

Has Brexit heralded a major shift in international politics? What are the implications of Donald Trump’s unpredictability?

After his acclaimed and insightful talk last year, AIIA Victoria is delighted to welcome back Sir Nigel Broomfield KCMG to give his views on Brexit and Trump in a new ‘post-truth’ world.  As a former British Ambassador to Germany, Sir Nigel is uniquely placed to observe how these developments are playing out in Britain, Europe, and beyond.

Sir Nigel Broomfield is a retired British diplomat.  After serving in the Army, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1969 and served in the British Embassies in Bonn and Moscow, as well as in senior posts at the FCO in London.  He was Deputy High Commissioner, New Delhi, 1985–88; Ambassador to the German Democratic Republic 1988–90; Deputy Under Secretary of State (Defence) at the FCO 1990–92; and Ambassador to Germany 1993–97.  He is currently Honorary President of the German-British Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of Cambridge Quantum Computing Ltd.
